在现代电子学的电路实验和设备检测中，信号发生器具有十分广泛的用途，与示波器、电压表、频率计等仪器一样，是常用的最普通、最基本的仪器设备之一。各种波形曲线均可以三角函数方程式来表示。能够产生多种波形的电路被称为函数信号发生器。通过对函数波形发生器原理以及构成分析，可设计一种能变换出三角波、方波、锯齿波和正弦波的函数发生器。信号发生器是工业生产、产品开发、科学研究等领域必备的工具，正弦波、三角波、方波是常用的基本测试信号，因此被广泛应用于电子电路、自动控制系统和教学实验等领域。
