An electrocardiogram (ECG) records the electrical activity of the heart. The heart
produces tiny electrical impulses which spread through the heart muscle to make the
heart contract. These impulses can be detected by the ECG machine. Electronic fetal
ECG monitoring is a technique of obtaining important information about the condition of
the fetus during pregnancy, by measuring the electrical signals generated by the fetal
heart as measured multi-channel electrodes placed on the mother’s body surface.
Fetal ECG (FECG) monitoring enables accurate measurement of fetal cardiac
performance including transient or permanent abnormalities of rhythm. During labor and
delivery, the heartbeat of the baby is monitored in order to make sure that enough blood
flow and oxygen are getting through to the unborn fetus.
