Frequency selective channels are characterized by either delay spread or coherence bandwidth which measures the channel decorrelation in frequency. By choosing the sub-carrier spacing properly in relation to the channel coherence bandwidth, OFDM can be used to convert a frequency selective channel into a parallel collection of frequency flat subchannels. Techniques that are appropriate for flat fading channels can then be applied in a straight forward fashion.)
